Rural Hill Center of Scottish Heritage
Mecklenburg County is a county of historical significance, not the least being its population of Scot-Irish settlers. These adventurers brought with them many of their beloved traditions. The Scottish Highland Games are a tribute to those long ago events whereby the Chiefs of the various clans relied on the outcome of those events to determine who among their followers were of the highest character and the most able to answer the call to battle when the time came.
Thus the Loch Norman Highland Games exemplify the tensions and anxieties associated with those warriors who wished to impress their Chiefs, by being the best in each event. Much more has been added since then, however.
The Rural Hill Scottish Festival and Loch Norman Highland Games are being held April 21-22, 2018 at 4431 Neck Road, Huntersville, NC. We will meet at the entrance where Ken and Doris McArthur will meet you with your pre-paid tickets and a free event program at 9:00am, Saturday April 21, 2018. The opening ceremonies begin at 10:00am with massed pipe bands and presentation of the colors, by the Scottish American Military Society color guards. An event not to miss. You will be given a quick tour of the grounds and upcoming events and you will then be on your own to enjoy and stay as long as you wish. There are events going on all day and there are many opportunities for you to indulge your tastes with Scottish foods as well as American fare. Especially exciting are the athletic events and highland dancing. The shrill of the pipes and drums can be heard throughout the day and you may even discover that you have Scot’s blood coursing through your veins by visiting the various clan tents surrounding the events field.
Please prepare and give or send a check for $20 per person to Ken before the deadline of April 14, 2018. Ken has been asked to present one check payable to the games.
Make the checks payable to Ken McArthur and send to: 5126 Hunt Stand Lane, Charlotte, NC 28226 or pay at the April luncheon.
